Certificates

A copy of a birth, marriage or death certificate is avialable from the Registrar General, Deemsters Walk, Bucks Road, Douglas. Give them as much information as possible. For full details see their web site at

http://www.gov.im/registries/general/civilregistry/welcome.xml

A marriage certificte will provide the following details:
the date and place of the marriage
the names of the parties
the ages of the parties - often given as "full"
the condition of the parties - bachelor, spinster, widow, etc.
the residence of the parties
names of the witnesses

The LDS have filmed the Church of England registers for the years 1884-1911. These films show the full details of baptisms, marriages and burials for the period.

In general, the certificate of any marriage listed in this index with a complete date (in the period 1884-1911) is available on these films.

Sources

This index is being prepared from microfilms of the Official Indices held in the General Registry, Douglas, and the various filmed Volumes mentioned above. In addition, some Roman Catholic marriages for the period 1817-1849 are included. These were forwarded to the Registry Office in 1849.

The Roman Catholic Registers post 1849 are being transcribed and the data will be added as they become available.

Possible Spouses

Each page of a Register Book can record the details of two marriages. The Official Indices give only the volume name and page number so it is not always possible to completly identify a marriage and in this case all possible partners are shown.

The work of Tom Corteen and Sue Pedersen has enabled the marriages in Maughold to be completely identified.

A little history

In 1849 it became legal to perform marriges in a place other than the Established Church i.e. The Church of England. At this time the Island was divided into four registration districts with Registry Offices, at which Civil Marriages could be performed, in Castletown, Douglas, Peel and Ramsey. The Registry Office in each district kept a record of all marriages in the district by copying the details into a Register Book. While a separate Book was maintained for each Established Church from the beginning, all Non-conforming marriages were initially recorded in a single, separate volume with the reference A1. As the book ssbecame full second would be started, referenced A2, etc. In 1885 separate books were established for each non-conforming Church or Chapel. Registry Office marriages continued to be recorded in the A1 or A2 volumes.

In many cases (maybe the majority) only the groom's name has been indexed in the Official Index. Inititially I am concentrating on those cases where both names are available.

Church/Office Codes

The Church or Office at which the marriage was performed is indicated in the index by a code according to the table below.

NOTE: Capitalized codes are as they appear in the Official Index. Lower case codes are used only in this index to identify C of E churches.
